Joan Irene Solomon Kookendoffer
Funeral Time: Saturday, May 14th at 2:30PM
On July 28th, 1954, the world welcomed a person who would touch so many lives with her compassion, kind heart, fantastic laugh, delicious desserts, and sunshine that she would lend to anyone who needed it. Joan Irene “Solomon” Kookendoffer grew up in Lowell, IN on her family’s farm. She spent her days playing with her siblings and cousins and tried not to get pecked as she collected chicken eggs. Her big heart and love of children drove her to nursing school. Joan was a Pediatrics nurse for over 40 years and spent the last few years of her career in the Mother Baby Unit at Central Baptist Hospital. When she wasn’t tending to sick children, Joan was walking outside, quilting, shopping for antiques, baking, and spending time with her friends and family. Speaking of family, Joan met her husband, Micheal, during a 13.1 mile running race. He stayed with her and followed her through the entire race just as he did in life – 41.5 years of love. Through their love, they were gifted two children – Kimberly and Bradley.
Far too soon we lost Joan, her light, on May 9th, 2022, to cancer. The wonderful thing about sunshine though is you never forget the way it makes you feel – the way it illuminates everything around it, the warmth of it as it wraps itself around you. We will always remember her sunshine.
Joan is survived by her husband, Micheal; children, Kimberly & Bradley; granddaughter, Kenley; and siblings, Gary & Mary. Joan was preceded in death by her parents – Roy C. Solomon and Irene Hooley Solomon.
A memorial service will be held at 2:30 pm Saturday, May 14, 2022, at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home-Harrodsburg Rd. Visitation will be 6-8 pm Friday, May 13th at the funeral home. Burial will be private. Any contributions in Joan’s memory can be made to the Woodford County Humane Society, 265 Thomas Lane, Versailles, KY 40383 – where she rescued her beloved dog and constant companion, Heidi.
