Margaret Brearley Grimes
GRIMES, Margaret Brearley, widow of the late Rev. Dr. John W. Grimes, died March 24, 2018. She is survived by her three children: Marion Grimes Howard (Jerry), Lexington, KY; Rebecca Grimes Moser (David), Lorton, VA; and Addison C. Grimes (Robin), Sudbury, MA. She is also survived by eight grandchildren: Spencer Grimes Howard, Brandon Michael Howard, Stephen Alexander Moser, Justin Robert Moser, Jennifer Xinfang Moser, Adriana Suzanna Grimes, Meredith Margaret Grimes, and Julia Whitney Grimes; and a sister-in-law, Mary Jo Brearley. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Dr. H.C. Brearley, Jr. Born in Greenville (Clemson), SC, the daughter of the late Dr. Harrington Cooper Brearley and Margaret Marion Brearley, she grew up in Nashville, TN, and attended Peabody Demonstration School and Vanderbilt University, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude. She received an MA in Education from the University of Kentucky and advanced training in Counseling at Louisville Presbyterian Seminary. She was a long time member of First Presbyterian Church, Lexington, KY where she served as a Deacon and an Elder. In the 1950s, she and her husband were missionaries in Brazil, where their second daughter was born. She taught in Fayette County Public Schools, was president of FCEA (Fayette County Education Association), and served on the KEA Board and NEA Teacher Rights Committee. For many years she worked with her husband in a private counseling practice. Later she was Director of Volunteer Placement at the Volunteer Center of the Bluegrass and was Director of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). Throughout her life, she valued her loving family and many friends. She was particularly interested in education, protecting the environment and peace and justice issues. As a counselor/educator, she found human relationships fascinating and challenging.
